From deconstruction to re-construction, rebuilding of a known/outdoor object in an indoor space.
The object is shown in a new environment and it gains new meaning.
The original form is disguised, it may take an unrecognisable function and by doing so gives the viewer the possibility to remake the object according to her/his imagination.
The action consists of bringing a new layer to the object; hiding it by protecting the object is the conservation.
WVB wil show his layering methods through different phases.
During the performance the viewer will be able to see the object’s transformation.

Gläso arises from an intimate relation and a personal attraction; and is the love for a banned and lost object. It is an attempt to crystallize time by reversing the process, from stable to fluid in different circumstances which would then in principle evoke endless transparencies. Gläso is the existence of a project and a work in progress. Walt Van Beek, reverses the traditional working methods of an archaeologist by subverting his methods.

With Gläserbol, Walt Van Beek questions the transitoriness of an object and tries to transform that into a transitoriness of thought.

Gläserbol arises from an intimate relation and a personal attraction; and is the love for a banned and lost object. It is an attempt to crystallize time by reversing the process, from stable to fluid in different circumstances which would then in principle evoke endless transparencies. Gläserbol is the coming into existence of a project and a work in progress. In the second phase of the exhibition WvB wants to literally burry the bottle banks in order for it to lose its Dinglichsein. You could compare it with the work of an archaeologist who discovers things that have been preserved for future generations. But by putting the bottle banks into the ground, WVB, reverses the traditional working methods of an archaeologist.

Gläserbol is an installation of bottle banks. The first fase comprises the restoration of the containers and the new given functions. In de second fase the Gläserbol is buried.

Gläserbol is an artistic project/work in progress from Walt Van Beek. Walt Van Beek works as an artist and as is a curator for WaiWaiSpace.

Walt Van Beek stelt zich met Gläserbol vragen over de tijdelijkheid van het ding en probeert die om te zetten in de tijdloosheid van een gedachte. Gläserbol is ontstaan vanuit een intieme verhouding en een delicate, moeilijk vast te pinnen aantrekkingskracht. Het is een poging de tijd te kristalliseren in een omgekeerde groei van vast naar vloeibaar die onder verschillende omstandigheden kan plaatsvinden en in principe een oneindigheid aan transparanties kan voortbrengen. Gläserbol is het ontstaan van een project en van een work in progress.

Walt Van Beek heeft ook geen vrede met de ruimtelijkheid van de dingen. In een volgende fase wil hij Gläser, die op dat moment zijn bolkarakter verliest, ondergronds doen gaan. Dat is letterlijk op te vatten, hij graaft de containers in, zodat ze hun Dinglichsein verliezen. Het is het tweevoudige werk van de archeoloog: een ding en een tijd voor volgende generaties conserveren. Ook hier gaat Walt Van Beek tegendraads te werk door de methode en praktijk van de archeoloog om te keren en het ding in de grond te stoppen.

Gläserbol is een ruimtelijke installatie met glascontainers. De bollen worden eerst gedeeltelijk gerestaureerd en hun functie wordt omgedraaid. In een tweede fase wordt Gläser ingegraven.

Gläserbol is een artistiek project van Walt Van Beek. Walt Van Beek (BE) werkt als kunstenaar en als curator voor WaiWaiSpace.

Walt Van Beek, avec Gläserbol, pose des questions sur la temporalité de l’objet et essaie de les transformer dans l'intemporalité de la pensée. Gläserbol est le résultat d'une relation intime et d'une attraction délicate qui est difficile à saisir. C'est une tentative de cristalliser le temps dans une croissance à l'envers qui bascule de rigide en liquide sous des circonstances variées et qui peut en principe générer une infinité de transparences. Gläserbol est la naissance d'un projet et d'un « work in progress ».
Walt Van Beek ne peut pas accepter la tridimensionnalité des choses. Dans une deuxième phase, il exploitera le sous-sol. A ce moment, Gläser perd littéralement son caractère formel : les bulles seront enfouies de façon à perdre leur Dinglichsein, leur état formel. C'est le travail double de l'archéologue: un objet et un temps à conserver pour les générations suivantes. Walt Van Beek renverse son travail, en enterrant l’objet, il inverse la méthode et la pratique d'un archéologue. Gläserbol est une installation spatiale avec des conteneurs de verre. D'abord les bulles sont partiellement restaurées et leur fonction est retournée. Dans une deuxième phase, Gläser sera enterré.

Pleurer et Bonheur, two points of view on current issues on Brussels art scene - from an insider, Walt Van Beek, and from an outsider, Silvio Salgado.
The idea is to construct the exhibition through a dialogue of views. Both curators independently choose artists and works - as points of view to the confrontations that we are faced with in society, politics, culture.
The exhibition Pleurer et Bonheur brings together seven artists from Belgium, France and the Netherlands: Michel Couturier, Simona Denicolai & Ivo Provoost, Korneel Devillé, Jörn Quandt, Philippe Van Wolputte, and Mehdi-Georges Lahlou. They work with a variety of media, from drawing to site-specific installation and performance - and also design. As the curators of the event, Walt Van Beek and Sílvio Salgado, argue, the exhibition aims at promoting dialogue rather than serving a polished end-product.
Pleurer et Bonheur opens at the Vienna International Apartment in Brussels at rue de l'Etuve/ Stoofstraat 81 A13, from 18 December 2009 to 28 February 2010. The exhibition is organised in collaboration with another independent venue in Brussels, the Wai Wai Space.

Pleurer et Bonheur, deux points de vue sur les questions actuelles à propos de la scène artistique de Bruxelles - de la part de l’insider , Walt Van Beek et de l’outsider, Silvio Salgado.
L’idée est de construire une exposition à travers un dialogue de visions. Indépendamment les deux curateurs ont choisi des artistes et des oeuvres qui représentent les confrontations auxquelles nous devons faire face dans notre société, en politique ou en culture.
L’exposition Pleurer et Bonheur confronte 7 artistes belges, français et néerlandais : Michel Couturier, Simona Denicolai & Ivo Provoost, Korneel Devillé, Jörn Quandt, Philippe Van Wolputte et Mehdi-Georges Lahlou. Ils travaillent dans des médias divers, en dessinant des installations spécifiques, des représentations, mais aussi du design. Comme les curateurs de l’événement, Walt Van Beek et Sílvio Salgado, l’avancent, l’exposition vise à promouvoir un dialogue plutôt que d’offrir un produit fini.
Pleurer et Bonheur ouvrira au Vienna International Apartment à Bruxelles, rue de l’Etuve 81 A13, du 18 décembre 2009 au 28 février 2010. L’exposition est organisée en collaboration avec un autre espace indépendant à Bruxelles, Wai Wai Space.

De opzet van Pleurer et Bonheur is een tentoonstelling maken door middel van een uitwisseling van visies. De curatoren hebben onafhankelijk van elkaar kunstenaars en werken geselecteerd waarin zowel maatschappelijke, politieke als culturele confrontaties worden belichaamd.
De tentoonstelling Pleurer et Bonheur presenteert zeven kunstenaars: Michel Couturier, Simona Denicolai & Ivo Provoost, Korneel Devillé, Jörn Quandt, Philippe Van Wolputte, en Mehdi-Georges Lahlou, afkomstig uit drie landen: België, Frankrijk en Nederland, en met werk in verschillende media: installatie, performance en design. De curatoren Walt Van Beek en Silvio Salgado willen met hun tentoonstelling eerder een dialoog op gang brengen dan een kant-en-klaar product afleveren.
Pleurer et Bonheur gaat door in het Vienna International Apartment in de rue de l'Etuve/ Stoofstraat 81 A13 in Brussel van 18 december 2009 tot 28 februari 2010. De tentoonstelling is een samenwerking met de onafhankelijke ruimte WAI WAI SPACE, Brussel.

WaiWaispace: “Wouter, How did you come up with the idea of building a tank?

WDR: “Children, kids and toddlers are known for their incredible creativity and imagination. An object as simple as a branch of a tree is enough to play around with all day, make up stories or use it as a submarine to conquer unknown areas of the cellar.

The difference with grown-ups is tremendous. Where does all that imagination go as we grow up? Do we lose the ability to imagine, to let our creativity flow? Maybe society dictates who we are and how we should behave and think by kicking every last sparkle of creativity out of the human body?

Is the social pressure of “behaving” so big, that we rather keep our thoughts to ourselves, and avoid the remarks and looks given by the people around us? Or do we simply use our creativity for other purposes?

In order to find some answers or at least start a discussion, I looked for an example in my own environment. During the first Gulf War, I was 8 years old at the time, images of the war were all over: in the papers, on television,... Build out of paperboard and tape, I made the perfect toy to play with: a tank.

TANK W is an exact copy of the original paperboard tank, this time built with the materials and techniques I mainly use today: technical drawings, CNC, multiplex, ...

TANK W is a statement, a tribute to creativity.

WaiWaiSpace: “The second Gulf War is an ongoing conflict. Is there also a link with Tank W?”

WDR: “Absolutely. There is a gap of more than 10 years between the first and second Gulf War. I was about 8 years old when I made the paperboard tank. Now I’m 26, which means that if I would have lived in Iraq I would be going through my second war right now. That’s an amazing thought. Above all Tank W also visualizes the fact that people have hard time learning from the past. It seems like history keeps repeating itself.”
